Sarah Drummond Art

My Passion is working with color and texture. I began making pieced quilts using traditional methods 15 years ago. During that time I worked full time in design in the clothing industry.
It was not until 7 years ago that I learned the layering technique that I use on my pieces today. This technique is less confining, and gives me more freedom to express myself in a more artistic way. I use netting and freeform stitching to hold the finished piece together. I have been fascinated ever since, working to fine tune my skills and subject matter. My current focus is creating landscapes. I prefer to work small, depicting vast open spaces which are calming to me. Water, marshlands, and mountains are all a source of inspiration to me. Each piece presents new challenges as I work to simplify colors and shapes. I start by laying out fabrics together- using the gifts that can be found in the colorful printed pieces. I may interpret a leaf printed on the fabric, as a tree in the distance, for example. I continue to work to balance the patterns and shapes using the endless possibilities of color combinations that I have in my head. My goal is to capture the beauty of the nature surrounding me, in an abstract assemblage of color and texture. Each piece is unique, and my ideas are continually evolving.
